By default, ProFTPD assumes that the DNS name of your server is that returned by:
and so it tries to resolve that name via DNS to an IP address. (Technically, ProFTPD internally uses
gethostname(2)
system call, which usually uses/etc/hostname
.) If that DNS resolution fails, ProFTPD fails to start up, because it thinks that your server will be unreachable by any other FTP client.You might be able to work around this issue by using the
DefaultAddress
directive in yourproftpd.conf
