I use UNetbootin in order to make bootable flash drives.
I have gone through their supported operating systems, and although android-x86 is not listed, neither is xbmc, which is the last thing I made a bootable flash drive out of.
Great software, cross platform and very useful.
Use UNetbootin to create a Live USB with an ISO from
http://www.androidsim.net/2011/08/android-32-22-live-installation-images.html
They also have newer Android live CDs, good luck!
I would advise you to use Yumi which you can download it for free from
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/.
It provides a good support for a variety of iso packages and also supports unlisted iso files. Also it can support multiple operating systems in one USB drive.
You can get a good tutorial of using it at

Use liveusb-creator as it works on Linux and Windows. I've used it several times and got no complains.
